According to the BBC, more than 500,000 migrants have made their way across the Mediterranean to Europe in 2015, sparking a crisis as countries struggle to cope with the influx and creating division in the European Union over the best way to resettle people. In October, as part of the Knowledge by the Slice lecture series, a panel of Penn Arts and Sciences professors gathered to discuss European social policy, the EU's response to the crisis, and international human rights.

The panel included Mitchell Orenstein, a professor of Slavic languages and literatures whose research lies at the intersection of comparative politics, international political economy, and global public policy; Julia Lynch, an associate professor of political science who studies the politics of inequality, social policy, and the economy in comparative perspective; and Eileen Doherty-Sil, the associate director of the undergraduate program and adjunct associate professor in the political science department, whose research focuses on international relations and human rights.
